Uses And Benefits Of Fava Flour In Cooking

By Mary Richardson

In the health conscious world of today, most people look for different ways to alter their baking with alternatives to the many traditional items. Over time, the outlook has changed for the various foods we consume thanks to improvements brought through technology and the awareness of what is in the different foods. Less physical activity has also caused a need for change in regular diets. Mixing or completely substituting fava flour for other flours in recipes has benefits.

The fava bean looks similar to the lima bean but is quite different. The flour is made from blanching the bean to remove the tough outer shell and grinding the dried bean. Originally, these beans were used by the ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. They continue to be used all over the world.

Beans are an excellent protein source. Some have difficulty finding a good protein source and these provide a superior alternative. Iron and dietary fibers are also found in beans. People who have a hard time digesting meat or choose to enjoy the benefits of being a vegetarian are glad to use bean flours in their baking habits.

Medical knowledge has discovered that many people are not able to easily process foods rich in gluten. Traditional flours and bases in recipes are often rich in gluten. The majority of people are able to process gluten easily. However, many people have found that their chronic stomach pains come from an inability to digest gluten. Bean based flours are typically gluten free and are easily substituted for their traditional versions.

Bean based flours are easily mixed into or able to replace regular flours. These are considered a great contributor to a healthy diet. The bean flour typically can replace the white or wheat gluten rich versions of flours to provide a completely gluten-free experience. When enhancing white or wheat flours, recipes often call for a quarter cup.

Baked goods are not the only meal for this substitute. The substitute can be used in place of traditional flours in nearly all cases. It is used as a gravy base, for dips, and to thicken soups. Breads, pizza, cookies, cakes, and pancakes are examples of perfect uses.

Storage needs should be considered when buying this type of food product. Not all grocery stores include bean flours in their offerings and it is common for people to order the product in larger quantities. Bean flours can be frozen for long periods of time in order to prevent them from spoiling.

Throughout time habits have been formed and broken. In the last couple of decades there has been an increase in obesity and as a result an increase in health concerns. Technology and increased medical knowledge has provided people with more information to make better choices. Due to more sedentary lifestyles and an increase in knowledge about the benefits of a wide variety of foods, society has become more aware of the benefits of bean based food items.
